Caries in Seniors

At Ardas Family Dental, Parker, CO we’re committed to providing for the oral health needs of seniors, just as we would for patients of any age. Tooth loss is not an inevitable part of aging but is the result of diseases which should be fought. Therefore, it saddens us that the Centers for Disease Control estimates that one in five seniors had untreated tooth decay. We want to take some time to address why that is.

This level of tooth decay often is a decline in oral health and not just the result of a lifetime of poor maintenance. While it is true that seniors who grew up without fluoridated water are more vulnerable to decay, their increased rate of infections can often be traced to changes in their lifestyles. Some become forgetful about brushing, but some also have limited dexterity or lack insurance options. They may also be eating softer food, which may be innutritious and high in sugar, or suffering from dry mouth, which is a common side-effect of medications for cancer and anxiety, among other things.

All of these problems are fixable. We accept a large number of insurances, including Medicaid, and provide flexible payment plans. Our hygienists can recommend products following a deep cleaning which are easier to use for people with limited dexterity, along with throat moisturizers. We also are highly skilled in providing restorations to seniors whose teeth have already been damaged.

Alcohol and Oral Cancer

One of our many services at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, Colorado is screening for oral cancer. In recent years, the public has become more aware of the dangers of tobacco and HPV, but in November, the American Society of Clinical Oncology announced that alcohol also drives up oral cancer rates.

It was long known that alcohol combined with tobacco use was a major cause of oral cancer, but it was difficult to get data on the two factors independent of each other. What is new about the ASCO study is that it found that alcohol alone increases a person’s risk and that this is true even for light drinkers. Why, exactly, remains unclear. It could be that alcohol breaks down mouth tissue and when the tissue rebuilds, the DNA is damaged, resulting in the growth of cancerous tissue. In any case, which kind of alcohol is consumed appears to be irrelevant, and heavy drinkers are at the most risk.

Oral cancer is far from the only kind linked to alcohol, but cancers of the aerodigestive tract (which includes the mouth and esophagus) are unique in that the risk of cancer is known to decline if the patient stops drinking. Ardas Family Dental also provides reconstructive work for those already battling cancer.

The Diabetes-Gum Disease Connection

In Parker, Colorado, we at Ardas Family Dental are particularly attentive to the needs of our diabetic patients. Diabetes puts people at heightened risk for gum disease, which is why we want to educate our patients about it and emphasize the importance of oral hygiene.

Gum inflammation is called gingivitis. It occurs as a result of bacteria in the gum pockets producing a large amount of acid. The acid is a by-product of bacteria feeding on sugar, so when they have more sugar to feed on, they multiply faster, produce more acid, and cause more damage to the gums. The acid becomes trapped in a sticky substance on the teeth called plaque, and if gingivitis isn’t stopped, it could progress into a much more serious ailment, periodontal disease.

People with diabetes have a harder time fighting off infections. There is also evidence that periodontal disease makes it harder for the body to regulate glucose levels. When glucose levels are poorly controlled, gum disease is more likely to develop and worsen. What all this means is that diabetic people need to make sure they are keeping regular dental appointments and keeping us informed if they are having difficulty controlling their blood sugar levels.

Dr. Roopi Kattaura operates Ardas Family Dental at 10233 S Parker Rd, Suite 205, Parker, Colorado. To learn more about diabetes and oral health, call 720-459-8420 or visit ArdasFamilyDental.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Repairing a Tooth with Root Canal Therapy

If you have a tooth that is decaying, or severely damaged and/or infected, then Dr. Roopi Kattaura of Ardas Family Dental may recommend a root canal. Root canals are necessary to treat a tooth that has been damaged and Dr. Kattaura promises to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible. Though the term “root canal” sounds terrifying, the procedure is less painful than living with a toothache.

These days, with modern dental technology, root canals are very similar to routine fillings. Depending on the condition of a patient’s tooth, the procedure can be completed in one or two visits. Repairing a tooth with root canal therapy has numerous advantages, such as improving the way the teeth chew and bite, and protecting the surrounding teeth from excessive wear. With proper care, a tooth that has been restored with a root canal can last a lifetime.

If you have questions about root canal treatment, our doctors are here to answer them all. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit Medicaid Dentist Parker, CO, Lone Tree CO, Highlands Ranch, CO, Elizabeth Aurora CO, for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, call 720-459-8420.

Scaling and Root Planing in Parker, CO

In its most advanced stages, gum disease can lead to gum recession and even tooth loss.  At Ardas Family Dental, we want to help protect you and your family from gum disease.  When plaque builds up on a tooth, the gum starts to pull away from the tooth and form a pocket around the buildup, which only leads to more gum recession.  A scaling and root planing procedure is used to treat this buildup and prevent the later stages of gum disease.

Scaling and root planning are two parts of a deep cleaning procedure your dentist can perform to help repair gums.  It begins with scaling, the process of removing plaque from the surface of your teeth all the way down to your gums. Then comes root planing, which means minor contouring to smooth the surface of a tooth near the root.  When plaque has been removed and the tooth root has been smoothed, the gums that have pulled away will have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to as they heal.

To learn more about scaling, root planing, and all the services we offer, please give us a call or visit Kids and Family Dentist, Parker CO for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Roopi Kattaura at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, call 720-459-8420.

Mini Dental Implants In Parker, CO

The doctors at Ardas Family Dental take a lot of pride in offering the best dental technology and products to our patients.  We want patients to know that mini dental implants make treatments possible for patients who could not benefit from traditional implants. Mini dental implants are about half the diameter of a traditional dental implant, and can fit in spaces too narrow for traditional implants.

Another advantage to mini implants is they can typically be inserted right through the gum into the bone. No incision means no stitches, and eliminates the need for a recovery period. This means the restoration or denture can usually be placed right away or shortly after.  Mini implants can also be used to install a full upper or lower denture. Between 4 and 6 mini implants are placed along the gum line to serve as the base for securing the denture.  Any of our doctors can tell you a mini implant is the right solution for you.

To learn more about mini dental implants and all the services we offer, please give us a call or visit Kids and Family Dentist, Parker CO for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Roopi Kattaura at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, call 720-459-8420.

Frenectomy In Parker, CO

At Ardas Family Dental, our doctors perform frenectomies to correct a number of issues patients experience with the gums, lips, and tongue. A frenectomy is a procedure to remove a frenulum, or muscular attachment between two tissues, from the mouth.  You have a frenulum between your front teeth (both upper and lower) that connects your lips to your gums.  A very short or thick frenulum connecting the lips to the gum can cause extra pulling on the gums and lead to recession.  Another frenulum is located underneath the tongue, and if this attachment is short or thick, it can inhibit breastfeeding for infants and affect speech development in children. If your child needs a frenectomy it can be done while they are very young, and can recover quickly and continue to develop their speech.

The frenectomy procedure is simple and usually takes about 15 minutes.  Young children and infant patients are put under general anesthesia for the procedure, and adults have the option to use local anesthesia.  With either a scalpel or a laser tool, the frenulum is removed to free the tissue on either side. A laser procedure requires no stitches and causes little bleeding.  Following doctor’s instructions, most patients only feel slight discomfort afterwards and have a short healing time.

To learn more about frenectomies and all the services we offer, please give us a call or visit Kids and Family Dentist, Parker CO for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Roopi Kattaura at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, call 720-459-8420.

Inlays and Onlays

Preserving teeth’s function and appearance go hand-in-hand, and at Ardas Family Dental, partial crowns are one of many treatments we offer to patients with cracked or decayed teeth. Also known as inlays or onlays depending on their size, partial crowns are placed on the grinding surfaces of molars and premolars as a discrete solution to difficulties with chewing.

Although the surfaces of molars are often called flat, they are actually comprised of raised cusps separated by indentations. These indentations can become traps for food or acid, making them vulnerable to decay. An inlay is a small partial crown which covers a damaged indentation, while an onlay covers an indentation and replaces at least one damaged cusp. Before placing a partial crown, Dr. Kattaura will drill away the decayed material while the patient is numb. An impression will then be made of the patient’s mouth to use as the basis for the partial crown.

The patient may have an artificial crown during the few weeks it takes for a custom-fitted inlay or onlay to be milled and sent to our clinic. During the return visit, the partial crown is cemented in. Like a full crown, the partial crown will be made of tooth-colored porcelain so observers won’t even know it’s there. As long as proper oral hygiene is maintained, the patient will be at much less risk for infection and sensitivity.

Dr. Roopi Kattaura operates Ardas Family Dental at 10233 S Parker Rd, Suite 205, Parker, Colorado. To schedule an appointment, call 720-459-8420 or visit ArdasFamilyDental.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Invisalign at Ardas Family Dental

When it comes to wearing traditional braces, 92% of teens feel that it would put a damper on their appearance and self-confidence. At Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, our doctors want you to radiate confidence while straightening your teeth, which is why we offer Invisalign, CO as one of our orthodontic options, in addition to metal braces so that you have the choice to straighten your smile invisibly. Take a moment to learn about why the Invisalign treatment process may benefit you.

Straightening your teeth at any stage of your life has a significant impact on how you look and feel about yourself, which is why the process should be positive. To get started, you’ll need to schedule a consultation. During this consultation, you and one of our doctors will discuss your case in detail before X-rays, pictures and an impression of your teeth are taken. From these images, he or she will map out a precise treatment plan, including the exact movements of your teeth. Based on your individual treatment plan, a series of aligners will be created for your mouth and your mouth only. Approximately every two weeks you will begin wearing a new set of aligners, advancing you to the next stage of your treatment.

If you would like to inquire about our orthodontic options, please give us a call. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit Invisalign Dentist Parker, CO for more information. Clear Braces

Braces are still the most common way for adolescents and adults straighten their teeth.  Clear aligners have become more popular, but can’t give everyone the treatment their teeth need.  If your orthodontic treatment requires brackets and wires, clear braces may be the solution for you. Visit Ardas Family Dental to see if you are a candidate for clear braces.

Clear braces use the same straightening elements as traditional braces, but with materials designed to avoid the metallic look dreaded by so many patients. Brackets are now available in clear and ceramic varieties, and are designed to resist staining.  To connect these brackets, wires the color of natural teeth are used.  The final effect is not totally invisible, but is more subtle than traditional silver braces and doesn’t look metallic. Almost any orthodontic patient can achieve the same great results as traditional braces offer with a better disguise during treatment!

To learn more about the orthodontic options we offer, please give us a call or visit Kids and Family Dentist, Parker CO for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Roopi Kattaura at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, call 720-459-8420.

Bad Breath in Children

As a child-friendly practice, we at Ardas Family Dental often help children struggling with bad breath. Usually, this only requires them to learn proper oral hygiene, which includes the need to brush their tongues, as well as their teeth. Sometimes, however, there may be other factors contributing to halitosis which parents need to know about.

Brushing is helpful because bad breath is often caused by bacterial infections. But the smell may not just be coming from tooth decay or bacteria hiding on an unbrushed tongue. It may also be the result of mouth sores, inflamed tonsils, or drip from the sinus. A foreign object stuck in a child’s nose will also cause sinus drip, which smells bad on its own and feeds bacteria.

Bacteria especially thrives in a dry mouth, where there is no saliva to wash it away. Some medications, including ones used for psychiatric disorders such as ADHD and anxiety, cause dry mouth as a side effect. Children who breathe through their mouths rapidly get dehydrated, and oftentimes children simply don’t remember to drink while engaged in physical play. Keeping hydrated is important and breathing problems need to be resolved, but chewing sugar-free gum is an alternate means of stimulating saliva.

Dr. Roopi Kattaura operates Ardas Family Dental at 10233 S Parker Rd, Suite 205, Parker, Colorado. To schedule an appointment, call 720-459-8420 or visit ArdasFamilyDental.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Dental Anxiety in Children

From a child’s point-of-view, a trip to the dentist can be frightening, especially if they aren’t sure what to expect.  If your child suffers from dental anxiety, this can be destructive to his or her oral health in the future. Here at Ardas Family Dental, it is our goal to make our pediatric patients as comfortable as possible during each visit. Allow us to explain how you as a parent can assist our doctors in keeping your child calm before and during the dental exam.

Before – In preparation for your child’s dental exam, talk to them about what to look forward to. You don’t need to go into too much detail, but children need predictability in their lives in order to adjust to unfamiliar situations. During this time, communicate with your child about his or her fears and discuss them as the dental appointment draws closer. Additionally, be sure to explain that they will have healthy teeth and gums once the appointment is over.

During – Positive reinforcement is very effective during a dental visit. Applaud your child when they are being brave or tell them stories that will keep them pleasantly distracted.  We understand that it can be difficult to stay calm if your child is misbehaving, but be sure to remain patient with him or her.  Distractions are great for keeping your child’s mind off of the dental chair. You can also help them visualize a pleasant experience, or bring their favorite toy to help minimize their anxiety.

If you are searching for a pediatric dentist, look no further and give us a call. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit Pediatric Dentist Parker, CO for more information. Gingivitis Prevention

The first stage of gum disease, also known as gingivitis, is an inflammation of the gums usually brought on by a bacterial infection. If your home care oral hygiene routine isn’t up to par, you may notice a bit of blood in the sink when you brush or floss. If left untreated, gingivitis can cause the gums to separate from the teeth. At Ardas Family Dental we provide periodontal services to treat this condition, but we would much rather you prevent the problem before it arises.

Plaque is bacteria that constantly form on the surface of your teeth. When plaque isn’t removed, it turns into tartar which only our team of hygienists will be able to remove. The key to preventing gingivitis is eliminating as much plaque as possible by brushing after every meal and flossing at least once a day. Additionally, eat a well-balanced diet and visit the dentist regularly. Professional cleanings are extremely important in preventing gingivitis because your hygienist can significantly remove more plaque than you are able to at home.

Dental Crowns

At Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, our doctors may recommend Dental Crowns, CO for numerous reasons including protecting a weak tooth from fracturing, to replace a large filling when there isn’t enough portion of the tooth remaining, to attach a bridge, or to cover a dental implant. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape, or alignment. In the case that you ever need a dental crown, we’d like to take this opportunity to explain the process.

There are several types of materials that may be used for a crown, but those will be discussed during your consultation. During your first visit in preparation for your crown, X-rays will be taken to check the roots of the tooth receiving the crown and to observe the surrounding bone. If the tooth cannot support a crown, it may need to be filed down. Alternatively, if the tooth is damaged by decay, it may need to be filled to make it large enough to fit the crown. By the end of the first visit, your tooth will have a temporary crown that protects it until the final one is ready to be permanently placed.  When the permanent crown is ready, you will have a second visit.

If you have questions about dental crowns, please give us a call. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit Cosmetic Dentist Parker, CO for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, call 720-459-8420.

Oral Cancer Screening

The word cancer refers to changes in the body’s cells that cause them to grow out of control. Oral cancer is particularly dangerous, because in its early stages it may not be noticed by the patient. To prevent cancer of the oral cavity, Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO recommends Oral Cancer Screening, CO to patients to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in the mouth.

The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early when there is a greater chance for a cure. People who are at risk for oral cancer include tobacco users, heavy alcohol consumers, and those who like to soak up the sun since significant sun exposure increases the risk of lip cancer. The oral cancer screening test is performed by your dentist and uses an ultraviolet light or similar device that allows him or her to view issues that aren’t normally detected by the human eye. It’s important to remember, just because your dentist recommends an oral cancer screening it does not mean you have or are at risk of cancer.

Cosmetic dental procedures that may be recommended include veneers, teeth whitening, tooth-colored fillings, and Inlays and Onlays.

During the consultation to determine what cosmetic procedure best suits your needs, Dr. Kattaura will ask you to describe in detail what you like and dislike about your smile and what you wish to change. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

The temporomandibular joint acts as a sliding hinge, connecting the jawbone to the skull. We have two of them and they work together as a pair. TMJ disorders are a complex and poorly understood set of conditions characterized by pain in the jaw joint and surrounding tissues. When this occurs, it may be difficult to yawn, speak, or chew your food. Fortunately, at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO we can provide you with relief.

The exact cause of a person’s TMJ disorder is often difficult to establish, but the condition can be related to injury to the teeth or jaw, misalignment of the teeth or jaw and teeth grinding. Signs and symptoms may include pain in the jaw joint, jaw clicking and popping, and ear pain. In most cases, the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorder will be treated with non-invasive methods, first.

If you experience constant jaw pain, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit Dentist Parker, CO for more information. Bruxism Causes and Treatment

Some people clench their teeth from time to time, but if it happens constantly, this may be a sign of a condition called bruxism. If you have bruxism, you may unconsciously clench your teeth during the day, or clench them at night while you are sleeping. Unfortunately, there is no concrete evidence as to what causes bruxism, although, in the dental profession, it is believed that bruxism and occlusion (teeth alignment) go hand-in-hand, but the good news is that at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO we can provide you with relief.

According to the Bruxism Association, stress, anxiety, heavy alcohol use, caffeine, and sleep disorders, are suspected to cause bruxism. If you notice any of the following symptoms, such as jaw muscles that are tight or painful, rhythmic contractions of the jaw muscles or a grinding sound at night, you may be a “bruxer.” Putting an end to these symptoms requires a consultation with Dr. Kattaura. She may recommend an occlusal appliance, such as a night guard that fits over your top and bottom teeth to avoid grinding. It is important you pay attention to these symptoms and seek treatment immediately, because not doing so may result in fracturing, loosening, or loss of teeth.

If you suspect that you have bruxism, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit Dentist Parker, CO for more information. Sedation Dentistry: Nitrous Oxide

If you’ve ever heard of laughing gas, which gives you the giggles in the dentist chair, this form of sedation dentistry is called nitrous oxide. Nitrous Oxide is a safe and effective agent when at room temperature becomes a colorless, odorless, non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet taste. At Ardas Family Dental in Parker CO, we utilize this chemical compound to help you feel more comfortable during certain procedures.

Once one of our doctors gives you the green light for nitrous oxide sedation, this sedative agent is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose. Once the mask is applied, within a few short minutes you should start to feel more relaxed. Nitrous oxide is not intended to put you to sleep, therefore you will still be able to respond to any directions the dentist may have. Additionally, the effects will wear off soon after the mask is removed, allowing you to drive yourself home after your procedure.

If you have questions about our sedation options, please give us a call. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit General Dentist Parker, CO for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, call 720- 459-8420.

Apicoectomy

Occasionally, a tooth infection may be so deep that a root canal cannot clean it completely. This is often the case when pain is still felt after a root canal. At Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, we can help patients out when a root canal fails to clear up an infection. We do this by performing an apicoectomy.

An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure that cleans out the infection from the other side of the tooth. Instead of reaching into the tooth’s root by way of the crown, an apicoectomy accesses the infection directly through the tooth’s root. To begin the process, your dentist will make incisions in the gums to reveal the root’s tip. Sometimes bone tissue will need to be removed to access the root, so in that case, bone tissue removal will be the next step. Upon access to the root, any infected tissue surrounding the root will be removed. The last few millimeters of the root will also be removed so the root canal can then be cleaned out and sealed again, like during the root canal therapy. The bone and gum tissues are then put back in place and the gums are stitched together to heal.

An apicoectomy can end up saving a patient’s tooth. To learn more about services we provide at the practice, visit Cosmetic Dentist Parker, CO for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Ardas Family Dental in Parker, CO, call 720- 459-8420.
