Are You Brushing Correctly?

To prevent cavities, you need to remove plaque, the transparent layer of bacteria that coats the teeth after you eat foods that are high in carbohydrates. When plaque is left untreated, it can turn into tartar that only our doctors and hygienists at Ardas Family Dental are able to remove. In order to prevent plaque buildup, you need to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day.

Brushing also stimulates the gums, which helps to keep them healthy and prevent gum disease. Therefore, if you want to keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime, try utilizing these tips the next time you brush.

  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums.

  • Move the brush back and forth in a circular motion in short (tooth-wide) strokes.

  • Brush the outer tooth surfaces, the inner tooth surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

  • Use the tip of the brush to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, using a gentle up-and-down stroke.

  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria. If you have questions regarding your oral hygiene routine, give us a call.
