There are three basic types of retainers that may be recommended based on your situation. Two of the retainer options are removable, while the third option is a more permanent fix. Retention after orthodontic treatment is critical. After all, you don’t want all of that hard work to go to waste. The most common retainer is known as the “Hawley retainer” – a thin, tongue-shaped piece of acrylic molded to fix your mouth, with a wire that holds the teeth in their correct position. There is also a clear plastic alternative. Bonded retainers, also known as fixed retainers, require a thin wire worn across the back of the lower or upper front teeth. Bonded retainers use a similar cement as traditional braces, for a permanent result. Regardless of which type of retainer you choose, each of them will be custom-made for your mouth only.
